Introduction

My journey in the field of arboriculture has been a true learning experience fueled by passion. From my early days as a tree trimmer to my specialization as an arborist, I have gained unique expertise that allows me to provide top-quality service to my clients in Laval, Montreal, and the North Shore (Terrebonne, Repentigny, Mascouche, Boisbriand, Rosemère, Ahuntsic, Rosemont, Mount Royal, Villeray, etc.). In this article, I will share my career path, the lessons I've learned, and the mission that drives my company.

My Beginnings in Arboriculture

I began my training in arboriculture and tree pruning in 2014 at Fierbourg, a renowned school located in Quebec City. There, I had the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of arboriculture from passionate instructors, including Jean Lamontagne, a well-respected expert in the field. This period was a turning point for me, as it sparked my passion for trees and their care.

Working as a Tree Trimmer: A Different Reality

Back in my hometown of Lanaudière, I started working for several local tree trimming companies. At that time, most businesses followed old-fashioned practices, such as rounded tree pruning— a technique I had learned to avoid in school.

Despite this different approach from what I had learned, I gained valuable experience working for these companies. I honed my climbing skills and mastered the use of chainsaws. I also learned tree removal and cutting techniques, which allowed me to become a skilled tree technician.

Après environ 3-4 ans dans ce domaine, j’ai eu envie d’aller plus loin.

My Time in Rimouski: An Immersion in Utility Line Pruning

I then moved to Rimouski to work as a utility line arborist, primarily clearing trees from power lines. This experience allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of safety challenges and risk management in tree pruning. I learned to work with highly skilled teams and execute precise tasks in demanding conditions.

After a year in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, I decided to return to the Montreal and Laval area to take on new challenges.

Return to Montreal, Laval, and the North Shore: A Demanding Urban Environment

One of the aspects that fascinates me most about tree pruning is managing trees in urban environments. When you think of a century-old oak growing between two buildings in Westmount or in Montreal neighborhoods like Ahuntsic, Rosemont, Mount Royal, or Villeray, you quickly realize the challenge of maintaining these trees. They are exposed to unique conditions and require specialized expertise to stay healthy.

I arrived in the midst of the emerald ash borer crisis. I took part in countless ash tree removal projects in Montreal and Laval while continuing to refine my pruning techniques. I also worked after the major ice storm that hit the region, helping with the pruning of damaged trees.

The Evolution of Techniques and Continuous Adaptation

Over the years, with the emergence of new techniques, I had to adapt. One of the most significant transitions was shifting from double-rope climbing to single-rope climbing, a method I now use most of the time. This transition has allowed me to improve both my efficiency and safety during operations.

Sharing My Knowledge as a Team Leader

My years as a team leader have also allowed me to mentor several young arborists. I have learned a great deal from them, particularly by incorporating the latest techniques taught in the most recent training programs. The exchange of knowledge has always been an important driving force for me.

I have also furthered my education in arboriculture by taking various courses and studying specialized literature, particularly through the resources of the International Society of Arboriculture. This quest for knowledge allows me to stay constantly updated and fuels my passion for arboriculture. Thanks to my in-depth research, I have been able to better understand and care for the trees I work with, applying methods suited to each situation.

Why I Chose to Start My Own Business as a Tree Trimmer-Arborist

Over the years, I noticed that many companies prioritized a production-driven culture over quality and respect for the tree.

I had the opportunity to work with a company that shared values closer to those I learned at Fierbourg. This experience convinced me that I wanted to offer services that respect arboricultural principles, finding a balance between human safety and tree health.

A Commitment to Responsible Tree Pruning

Today, I advocate for responsible tree pruning that takes into account the tree's biology and its impact on the environment. My goal is to ensure the longevity of trees while maintaining the safety of urban and residential environments. Each intervention is designed to promote the health of the trees and optimize their development.

Conclusion

If you need a professional tree trimmer-arborist in Montreal, Laval, Ahuntsic, Rosemont, Mount Royal, Villeray, or anywhere on the North Shore, feel free to contact me. Together, we can ensure the health and safety of your trees for the years to come.
